Today, it seems like every technology conference promises the next big thing. Artificial intelligence. Workflow automation. Data analytics. Voice AI. Customer portals. Digital assistants. And the list keeps growing.

But when I talk with PIA members around the country, they’re not focused on the next new thing. Instead, I hear questions like these:

  • What solutions should I actually be paying attention to?
  • · How do I know which technologies are worth investing in?
  • · Does this integrate with my agency management system?

Technology has become one of the defining strategic issues facing independent agencies. It influences customer service, employee productivity, carrier relationships, and growth. It’s not about simply purchasing software but making sound business decisions in an increasingly connected insurance ecosystem.

That’s why we dedicated this issue of PIA Connection to technology. As you’ll see throughout these pages, the conversation has evolved. Agencies are looking to adopt technology responsibly, use their data more effectively, improve customer experiences, and ensure new solutions fit into existing workflows.

Helping agents navigate those questions has become one of PIA’s strategic priorities. Several years ago, we established PIA’s Technology Council because we recognized that independent agents needed more than product demonstrations and vendor presentations. It’s becoming a trusted forum where technology leaders, agency representatives, carriers, and industry experts can openly discuss emerging trends, identify challenges, and explore practical solutions together. Today, the Council is helping us understand where we should focus our education and member support.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one of the most talked-about technology issues today. And from our conversations with both agents and vendors, it’s clear that agencies have moved beyond AI curiosity. They want to understand where AI delivers measurable value, how it integrates with existing management systems, what governance is required, how customer data should be protected, and how new tools can improve their daily operations.

And beyond discussions of AI, agents are also telling us they don’t want more disconnected technology. They want solutions that work together, reduce friction, and support the ways they actually operate.

At PIA, our responsibility is to translate those conversations into practical resources that help members succeed.

PIA’s educational arm, CPIA, is developing a comprehensive AI course designed specifically for insurance professionals. The program is being built around the real questions agents are asking every day: understanding AI fundamentals, evaluating practical use cases, addressing governance and compliance, protecting customer information, and applying these technologies responsibly within agency operations. The goal is to help agents become informed, confident decision-makers as AI becomes an increasingly important part of the business.  Many members of the Technology Council are helping to develop this program.

The Technology Council has also reinforced another important lesson: technology is no longer something agencies can evaluate in isolation. Every piece of data agencies interact with is increasingly interconnected. Progress depends on collaboration across the insurance ecosystem.

PIA continues to strengthen partnerships with organizations such as AUGIE, bring together diverse perspectives through our Technology Council, and create opportunities for agents, carriers, solution providers, and industry leaders to learn from one another. When we share ideas, challenge assumptions, and work together, everyone benefits, especially the customers we serve.

Independent agents have always adapted to change. That’s one of the defining strengths of our distribution system. But adaptation requires leadership, education, collaboration, and a willingness to ask thoughtful questions before making important decisions.

We can’t predict every technology that will emerge over the next five years. But we can help ensure that independent agents have the knowledge, resources, and industry connections they need to evaluate new opportunities with confidence. Technology will continue to evolve. Our goal is to continue to help you navigate it.
